Summer Programme 2025

We run a programme of meet-ups during the summer - mostly for photography but also social. Visitors and potential new members are always welcome to come and meet us and join in. Dates and meetings will be displayed on this page as we go through the summer.

Sunday 11th May 2025 – Moonrise over The Needles Part I

Moon rise, with 99.25% of disc illuminated, is at 19:56 on heading 120.49 degrees, which will “a little left of the Needles and just behind the Isle of Wight” if you are standing on the southerly end of Mudeford Quay. [Optimum placing would be about 100metres down the beach on the spit, but you’d need of course to be a strong swimmer to get back home afterwards….] Sunset is at 20:43, so there will be a brightness in the sky, but still a good opportunity for practice.

We will meet at the ferry dock at 19.00. Sunset is at 20.43 so there will still be colour in the sky at moonrise.

Monday 12th May 2025 – Moonrise over The Needles Part II

Moon rise, with 99.98% of disc illuminated, is at 21:09 on heading 128.05 degrees, which will “a tiny bit left of the Needles” if you are standing on the beach and about in line with the south west end of the open ground behind the Christchurch Life Saving club and adjacent to Seaway Avenue (parking in Penny Lane car park). Sunset is at 20:45, so there will be a little lightness in the sky still.

Meet at Steamer Point Car Park at 20.00. Sunset is at 20.45 so there will still be colour in the sky at moonrise.

5th June – Lunch at New Forest Lavender, Landford SP5 2BG.

Meet at 10am in the car park for a couple of hours of photography (flower/dragonflies etc) before retiring to the tea-room for a bit lunch.

7th June (Saturday) – Round the Island Yacht Race.

We meet at Hurst Castle quite early – probably need to be there on the first ferry from Keyhaven so we can get in position before the big ocean going yachts arrive. Depending on wind etc they ca approach the shore really quite close.

30th June  – Butterflies & Dragonflies

Our next item on the Summer Programme is an outing to Whitten Pond to take photographs of butterflies and dragonflies. This will be led by Tim Rosier.

Date: Monday 30th June 2025

Place: Burbush Car Park (Burley, Ringwood BH24 4EF) – half way between Bransgore and Burley

Time: 8am (so the butterflies are still a bit sleepy).

You can use either a macro lens or a telephoto to do this sort of photography – and bring something to sit on.

At present the weather looks good for the 30th but if that changes drastically, we may need to reschedule.

13th July – New Forest Car Show

A small annual show of vintage and rare cars. Ideal for some detailed photography or just people watching. Meet at 11am next to Bransgore Village Hall, Bransgore BH23 8AY

26th July,  The Centenary Rolex Fastnet Race 2025.

A chance to photograph the World's largest offshore yacht race as they pass by Hurst Castle en route to Fastnet. Great opportunity to see the large multi hulled yachts under full sail. Meet up early at Keyhaven ferry to get a good spot. Long lens essential . A monopod or tripod with gimbal or video head recommended. Also a stool!  Organiser: John Huntley

2nd August – Burley Village Show

A small show with all the usual attractions (steam engines/brass band/birds of prey etc). Meet in the Queens Head car park at 10am for a couple of hours taking photographs before a drink and snack somewhere in the showground

15th August - Cars on Poole Quay - Hot Rods and American Classics

See the website for full details (https://www.letsgoout-bournemouthandpoole.co.uk/whats-on/car-nights-poole-quay/). We would meet on the quayside at 6pm. Organiser: Sue Barrett

16th August – Bournemouth Pier Fireworks

Meet on the undercliff around the area of the East Cliff Railway at 9pm so we can set up and revise techniques before the fireworks start at 10pm. Bring a tripod and (ideally) a cable release. We will go over the techniques to capture firework trails together before the show begins.
